"A library book borrowed before war broke out in 1939 has been returned - 70 years overdue.
Iris Chadwick took out the score of the musical Rose Marie from Cubitt Town Library on the Isle of Dogs, east London, when she was 13-years-old.
The drama of war breaking out meant she forgot to return the book and it has remained in her piano stool until now."

Rosh Chodesh Elul will be celebrated this coming week. It is a time where we begin our preparations for the days of Awe which follow in Tishrei. It marks a period where we take inventory of ourselves, and begin the process of repentance.
Let's also take a physical inventory. Do we have something in our possession which doesn't belong to us? Now is the time to return the overdue library book or the item you borrowed last year chich had completely slipped your mind.
My local Jewish newspaper invariably has a posting such as, "Would the person who borrowed ________ from our gemach please make sure to return it?"
Once, I was at the Jewish library in my neighborhood and the librarian enlisted my help in writing a text to be placed on stickers which would be pasted on the inside cover of each book. The text was to carry the admonition of returning books in good condition. She told me about the books that had been returned with coffee stains, and the like.
